Petrus Stuyvesant was a Dutch colonial governor. Starting in 1635 Stuyvesant was director-general of the Dutch colony New-Netherland, until the colony was taken over by the English and renamed to New York. In New York still some street names remind us of the Dutch rule, such as Wallstreet (the street next to the city walls) and Battery Park (referring to the artillery batteries were based in the 17th century).
William of Orange, was sovereign Prince of Orange from birth, Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland and Overijssel in the Dutch Republic from 1672 and King of England, Ireland and Scotland from 1689 until his death in 1702. In 1694 the Bank of England was founded, thus ensuring the bankers' support to his reign. His reign in Britain marked the beginning of the transition from the personal rule of the Stuarts to the more Parliament-centred rule of the House of Hanover.
Antoni van Leeuwenhoek was a Dutch businessman and scientist in the Golden Age of Dutch science and technology. A largely self-taught man in science, Van Leeuwenhoek is best known for his pioneering work in microscopy and for his contributions toward the establishment of microbiology as a scientific discipline. He was also the first to document microscopic observations of muscle fibers, bacteria, spermatozoa, red blood cells, crystals in gouty tophi, and blood flow in capillaries. Van Leeuwenhoek did not write any books; his discoveries came to light through correspondence with the Royal Society, which published his letters.
Baruch Spinoza was een Nederlands filosoof, wiskundige, politiek denker en lenzenslijper uit de vroege Verlichting. Hij was van Sefardisch-Joodse afkomst. Onder de natuurfilosofen is hij een radicaal die elke vorm van Openbaring of profetie ontkende en geen verklaring accepteerde dan die gebaseerd op de rede. In zijn filosofie speelde theologie geen rol.Hij wordt beschouwd als de grondlegger van het neutraal monisme en de dubbel-aspecttheorie. Zijn boeken waren tweehonderd jaar lang verboden in Europa, omdat zijn historische Bijbelkritiek zou leiden tot atheïsme en fatalisme. Spinoza was een volgeling en criticus van René Descartes.
Baruch Spinoza was a Dutch philosopher of Sephardi/Portuguese origin. By laying the groundwork for the 18th-century Enlightenment and modern biblical criticism, including modern conceptions of the self and the universe, he came to be considered one of the great rationalists of 17th-century philosophy. Along with René Descartes, Spinoza was a leading philosophical figure of the Dutch Golden Age. Spinoza's books were put on the Catholic Church's Index of Forbidden Books during a period of 200 years.

Margaretha Geertruida Zelle studied French, German and English lessons until she was 13 years old. At 18 she answered an advertisement in a Dutch newspaper placed by Dutch Colonial Army Captain Rudolf MacLeod; they got married and moved to Java where she joined a local dance group. The mariage was an overall disappointment and they returned to the Netherlands and filed for divorce. In 1902 Zelle moved to Paris and started in 1905 her exotic dance performances using the alias Mata Hari. Numerous rumours were spread about Mata Hari. Januari 1917 a German military attaché transmitted radio messages to Berlin describing the helpful activities of a German spy code-named H-21, being Mata Hari. The French accused her of spying for Germany and she was executed by a firing squad.
