Kom Ombo Temple

Edfu Temple

Horus falcon

Horus has been worshiped for a long time (from Ancient Egypt until the introduction of Christianity). Nice compensation as there was not much love going around in his family.

Horus is the son of Osiris and Isis. He has never known his father as Osiris was murdered by his brother who chopped him in 14 pieces and threw him into the Nile. As Isis was unable to locate the essential body part needed for conception she used magic for autogamy. After being born his mother placed Horus in a papyrus basket into the river Nile to prevent Seth to kill her sun as well. This worked out fine; Horus was found and raised and ultimately revenged his father by killing uncle Seth.

Horus is depicted in various ways as shown here.

The Kom Ombo Temple is built as an unusual double temple in the town of Kom Ombo (about 29 miles north of Aswan). It is built in the 2nd century B.C.Some additions to it were later made during the Roman period.

We were taken to the Temple of Edfu by horse and carriage. The Temple is dedicated to Horus and built in 237 B.C.

The temple is atypical because everything is perfectly symmetrical along the main axis: courts, halls, sanctuaries and rooms duplicated for two sets of gods; one being the crocodile god Sobek, god of fertility and creator of the world with Hathor and Khonsu, and the other being the falcon god Haroeris, also known as Horus the Elder, along with Tasenetnofret and Panebtawy.

Built from sandstone blocks, the huge temple is the most completely preserved temple in Egypt. It was built during the Ptolemaic dynasty (305 - 30 B.C.) which ended with Cleopatra VII.
